Freie Universität Berlin and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) are pleased to announce the fifth year of an intensive scholarship-supported summer seminar/internship program in Berlin for American journalism and communications students. We would be delighted and very grateful if you could help us spread the word about this exciting opportunity among your students, faculty and fellow staff. The program is targeted primarily at currently enrolled undergraduate students, but graduating Seniors, recent graduates and Master’s students will be accepted as well.

For the first six weeks of the program, participants will take part in a seminar series to expand their academic understanding of the politics, society and culture of Germany, and the country’s current social conditions and media scene. During the second week, students will go on excursions within Germany together with journalism students from the Independent States of the former Soviet Union. The final five weeks consist of an intensive internship with a German newspaper, magazine, radio station or PR firm in or near Berlin.

Applicants must have at least “advanced intermediate” German skills to take part in the program, as the seminars and internships take place in the German language. The 15 applicants who are finally selected for the program will be awarded a monthly stipend of 650 Euros for the duration of their stay in Germany. DAAD will also provide health and accident insurance. Intercontinental travel is at the participants’ expense.

The application deadline is January 31, 2012.

To find out about eligibility and the application requirements, please visit: http://www.daad.org/page/internxchange/

Due to the St. Thomas Hall construction project, the STT data site has been scheduled for relocation on Wednesday, November 16, 2011. The impact of this move will result in network printer outages in some offices and lab facilities. The relocation should be complete by 5:00 pm; however, in the event of complications the outage may extend into Thursday, November 17th. The relocation of this facility is a requirement of the STT renovation project and IT is making every effort to minimize the impact.

Areas affected by this printer outage include Admissions, Aquinas, Career Services, CAS Dean’s Office, CGCE, Communications (LOY 226 lab), Computer Science (CSLIT Labs), CTLE, Financial Aid, KSOM Advising, Math Lab, MGH Advising Center, Physics Labs , Provost, Purchasing, Registrar, ResLife, Student Affairs, and the Treasurer’s Office including Bursar’s, Payroll and Accounts Receivable. Computer lab printing and office printing to shared network printers will be unavailable for the duration of the move. Printing to local printers and Lanier copies will not be affected. All other data and networking services will not be affected.

We apologize for any inconvenience and ask that you plan your printing needs around this short downtime. This is also a great opportunity for all those affected to demonstrate our abilities to be green and reduce our dependency on printing. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Technology Support Center 941-4357.

Indulgent Consumers Are Buying More Handbags, Fewer Diapers

The danger of a double-dip recession is scaring everybody, but not enough to keep them from buying frivolous things. As third quarter sales figures come trickling in, consumer confidence is tanking, but consumer spending is still holding up. While Americans appear more frugal in some categories, they also seem to be having a few willpower problems. Whether spending too much on make-up or abandoning their commitment to environment-safe products, consumers are indulging as much as they’re cutting back, but it’s not their fault. “In a poor economy, at any given moment people are more likely to have problems with self-control than otherwise,” Kathleen D. Vohs, a marketing professor at the University of Minnesota recently told The New York Times. “Because there’s only so far their self-control energy can be stretched.”

It’s just about time to kick off another year of Technology on Your Own Terms, a series of workshops presented by the Weinberg Memorial Library and the Center for Teaching & Learning Excellence.

On Tuesday, October 18 from 12pm-1pm, Jason Oakey from the Office of Instructional Technology will present on Changing Channels: The Next Generation of Television. In this workshop, we’ll look at new options in home entertainment and media, from HDTV and BluRay to streaming video. We’ll talk about what consumers should look for when purchasing new television screens and introduce new streaming services like Hulu Plus, Netflix, and Apple TV.
