Department of Marketing Communications – Social Media Intern

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assist in Updating Social Media Sites: Review available information about campus news and events from University Press Releases, Events Calendar, web pages for University Departments (ex. Alumni Events, Performance Music Events, Weinberg Memorial Library etc.) and organizations (Royal Players, USPB, ISP, etc.).  Suggest items to post and compose text appropriate for targeted sites as needed. Sites include Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare.
  • Update Content on University YouTube and Flickr pages

Upload video content created by the University to our YouTube EDU channel and recommend videos posted by outside individuals or organizations to be added to playlists on our channel.

Upload new images from campus events as available and draft captions as requested. Maintain sets and collections for each semester.

  • Social Media Measurement – Create/maintain schedules of activity on all University social media sites. Understand what metrics are available on each site and what they measure. Keep spreadsheets current and prepare “dashboard” recapping key metrics to facilitate reporting results to University administration.
  • Social Media Development – Review new features on social media sites we participate in and suggest ways to improve our existing pages. Also, by periodically checking how other colleges and universities are using the media, recommend best practices in higher education for potential implementation on our sites.
  • Monitor Web Conversation about the University: Systematically search the Web for blog postings, video postings, new groups on SNS, college discussion sites, etc. where the University of Scranton is either a primary or secondary subject.  Evaluate findings and report on the volume and nature of the activity and assist in developing responses where appropriate.
  • Canvas Web for New Opportunities: Proactively search web sites, blogs and other web-based communities related to college search and higher education in general for new opportunities to enhance current recruitment activities or promote the University brand.

Preferred Experience

  • Good working knowledge of social media in general as well as an awareness of how it can be part of a brand marketing strategy.
  • Familiarity with Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr and Foursquare.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word.



  • Available to work a minimum of 15 hours per week in the fall and spring semesters and approximately 20 hours a week in the summer.
  • Incoming sophomore or junior preferred.
