Students currently taking Communication Ethics, as well as those facing ethical issues on the job, might be interested in the links to professional codes of ethics that have been posted on the Department of Communication’s Facebook page.

The links can be found on the Extended Information tab at the top of the department’s fan page.

Students interested in pursuing a career in print/online journalism might want to check out these movies to get a feel for the history of the newspaper business as well as some insight into some on-the-job issues:

1) All the President’s Men (Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford) Classic film about Watergate.

2) -30- (Jack Webb and William Conrad) A newspaper staff pursues the day’s big story.

3) The Paper (Michael Keaton, Robert Duvall, Glenn Close) Mayhem inside and outside the newsroom.

4) Absence of Malice (Paul Newman and Sally Field) A reporter confronts issues of ethics and the law.

RTN encouraging student involvment

Royal Network Television will host a meeting Friday at 3 p.m. in the television studio on the 4th floor of the St. Thomas Hall Communication Wing.

Nicolena Basso, executive producer of RTN, encourages students interested in joining RTN to attend the meeting.

“We are really trying to build up RTN this year, and need as many volunteers as possible,” said Basso. “It is great experience for anyone looking to get into Broadcasting, and it also looks great on a resume.”

She indicated that students attending Friday’s meeting will be able to get a good idea of what to expect if they join the RTN team. Students will also have an opportunity to share their ideas on the future direction of RTN.

Marketing communications expert to speak

The University of Scranton Department of Communication will host an informal talk with Susan Williams, president of The Williams Company, Friday, Sept. 17, at 2 p.m. in St. Thomas Hall room 465.

The Williams Company, headquartered in Collegeville, is an award-winning marketing communications agency that serves a wide range of clients from Fortune 500 companies such as ARAMARK to regional powerhouses such as the Geisinger Healthcare System.

Susan Williams has headed the company since 1987. Previously she had worked as editorial director for Chelsea House Publishers and editorial manager at the Springhouse Corporation.

La Festa Italiana opens Saturday

The 35th annual La Festa Italiana opens Saturday at noon on Courthouse Square in downtown Scranton and running through Monday evening.

Billed as “northeastern Pennsylvania’s largest celebration of culture and cuisine,” the event features more than 60 vendors offer fresh Italian cuisine and a variety of other goods.

Planners have arranged for a wide array of musical entertainment, including the University Jazz Band, which will perform Saturday at 9:30 p.m. There’s even a firework exhibit planned for Sunday at 10 p.m.
